Empire Services Takes on a Roof Removal Project Like a Real-Life Game of Operation
If you ever played the game Operation, you probably remember the pressure. One wrong move with the tweezers and suddenly the buzzer sounded, Cavity Sam’s nose lit up, and your turn was over. Winning the game required patience, coordination, and a steady hand. That same level of precision is happening right now on one of Empire Services’ industrial demolition projects.
Empire Services has been contracted by Warfel Construction Company to remove an old roof and support structure at a processing plant to prepare the space for brand new roof construction. While roof demolition may sound straightforward, this project is anything but ordinary. Directly beneath the roof, located in the middle of the active processing plant, are vital active utility lines that can’t be disrupted, creating a high-stakes environment where every cut matters.
Just like the game Operation, the Empire Services team must work carefully, methodically, and strategically to avoid “touching the sides."
A Delicate Demolition Challenge
The roof spans approximately 16,000 square feet and consists of an old-fashioned timber-framed roof covered with plywood, tarpaper, and shingles, while being supported by additional steel beams.
Below the roof structure sits a network of active utility piping and operational infrastructure that cannot be damaged during demolition. That meant heavy mechanical demolition equipment was not a logical solution. Instead, the Empire Services crew had to rely on precision, teamwork, and planning to safely dismantle the roof piece by piece.
The project showcases Empire Services’ ability to adapt demolition strategies to meet complex site conditions while maintaining strict safety standards and protecting critical infrastructure.
Methodical Roof Removal Requires Skill & Coordination
Rather than tearing down large sections all at once, Empire Services developed a systematic removal process designed to minimize risk and maximize control.
Two skilled crew members worked carefully on the roof using circular saws to cut small sections. As the debris was removed, it fell into the work area below, where scaffolding and planks shielded the active piping.
On the ground level, additional team members immediately collect and manage the debris, loading it into dumping bins for transport. That material is then emptied into a larger dumpster provided by Delaware Valley Contractors, an Empire Group affiliate, for proper disposal and site management.
The result is a demolition process that remains controlled, efficient, and safe from start to finish.
Working Around Active Utility Lines Demands Precision
Industrial demolition projects often involve challenges, but active utility systems add another level of complexity.
One accidental strike to a pipe or utility line could create costly downtime, safety issues, or operational disruptions for the processing facility. That’s why Empire Services approached the project with detailed care and focus. Crew members coordinate their movements, along with communication, timing, and situational awareness. Each person plays a role in keeping the project moving safely and efficiently.
Personnel lifts are being used throughout the project to help crew members safely access difficult areas around the piping systems. This allows the team to maneuver carefully through tight spaces while maintaining complete visibility and control during the project. They are also used in the removal of the support structures, enabling a crew member to torch cut them.
Safety Remains the Top Priority on Every Empire Services Project
No demolition project is successful without a strong commitment to safety, especially in an active industrial environment.
Empire Services continues to prioritize worker protection throughout every phase of the roof removal process. Crew members on the roof wore securely anchored harness systems to prevent falls, while the entire team is equipped with full personal protective equipment (PPE).
This proactive safety culture is one of the reasons general contractors continue to trust Empire Services with challenging demolition and site preparation projects throughout the region.
Stay Tuned for More Project Updates
This roof removal project is still ongoing, and the Empire Services team continues to make steady progress with safety and precision leading the way.
The project stands as a perfect example of how Empire Services combines experience, strategy, and teamwork to solve complex challenges in the field. Like Operation, success comes down to patience, skill, and coordination—and avoiding the buzzer.
