Concrete Demolition: An adjacent concrete pad was broken up and hauled away to make room for proper grading and fill.
Filling the Gap: How a Pit Closure Repurposed an Industrial Space
When businesses grow, their spaces need to evolve with them. Whether it’s reconfiguring an office layout or repurposing an older industrial property, renovation is often the key to unlocking a company’s full potential. For many organizations, purchasing an existing structure offers the space they need—but it also presents the challenge of transforming it into something functional, safe, and future-ready. That was the case for Empire Services with the pit project at a former manufacturing facility.
Turning Challenges into Opportunities
Renovation projects often begin with demolition—removing walls, clearing interiors, or even tearing down outdated structures like garages or sheds. But sometimes, the solution isn’t demolition; it’s strategic closure and repurposing.
Empire Services was tasked with closing a utility pit. The pit spanned approximately 45 feet and was 14 feet deep. It extended partially beneath the building, adding a layer of complexity that required careful planning, precise execution, and the correct materials for the application.
The Process: Precision at Every Step
Empire Services approached the project with a methodical, safety-first mindset:
Site Preparation: The team began by removing piping and conduits mounted on the wall above the pit, ensuring a clear and safe working area.
Emptying the Pit: Empire Services used an excavator to remove heavy grates covering the pit and to clear out accumulated debris, ensuring a safe and accessible site.
Nature's Symphony
Stone Backfill: In collaboration with affiliate Delaware Valley Utility Contractors, several tons of crushed stone were delivered and strategically placed to fill the pit and surrounding areas.
Sands of Time
Grading: The pit was filled to match the existing asphalt level. Next to the asphalt were concrete slabs. Additional stone was spread and leveled around the site preparing it for future paving.
The Result: A Clean Slate for Growth
Whether you’re renovating an office, redeveloping an industrial property, or tackling a complex site challenge, Empire Services has the experience and equipment to get the job done right.
