Contracted by SJ Thomas and in conjunction with Warehaus Engineering, Empire Services provided erosion control measures and excavation services, constructed coffer dams, and installed a bypass pumping system to control water infiltration. Excavation began with removing debris, old timber gates and hardware, and fallen sandstone blocks from the canal prior to the Berks County Parks and Recreation staff relocating wildlife from the canal, which included frogs, crayfish, and turtles.
Taking Part in the Restoration of Lock #47
Empire Services recently had the opportunity to take part in the historic Lock #47 restoration, which is part of the Union Canal in Bern Township, PA. This canal was once a primary source of transportation in the 19th century. Yet, it was not widely used since it did not attract much traffic from west of the Susquehanna. Yet, it did have a significant impact on the local communities it served. The Union Canal transformed into the Union Canal Trail, which is a link to many Berks County parks. Lock #47 is part of the Union Canal Trail and had fallen into disrepair since the last restoration in 1976. It is undergoing another restoration for visual aesthetics and educational purposes.
Although Lock #47 hasn’t been active for over a century, it has been transformed into a popular recreational area. We are grateful to take part in the restoration of this historic lock. We eagerly await the completed transformation of the canal. Whether it’s excavating a foundation or cleaning out a canal, we have the equipment and experience to transform your project.
